English Bulldogs - Rescues - Description
Contemporary English Bulldogs have a well-set body and massive heads. Actually, Bulldogs are valued according to the breadth of the head. The front view reveals a distinctive rectangular structure of the skull. The lower jaw is very undershot and curved (turned up). This provides for a firm scissors bite, which allowed old Bulldogs to close their mandibles on a bull's flesh in a death grip.
From their bull fighting ancestors, modern English Bulldogs have inherited thick and wrinkly flesh and a volumetric and weighty head. In bull fighting, these traits reduced the likelihood of having the spine snapped in the flight and impaired the palpability of a kick in the head. A death grip on a bull's nose or neck guaranteed the killing of the bull.
The muzzle is short. It has a wide black nose and a fleshy pendant upper lip. Eyes are set far apart. They should be dark and round. Ears are also set distinctively far from each other, underscoring the width of the forehead. They are thin and folded back. The tail is not long and it is carried high. The coat is short and may occur in fawn, light red, yellowish, and brindle or in different combinations of these colors.
Height: Males 14-26 inches (36-41 cm), females 12-14 inches (30-36 cm);
Weight: 35-45 pounds (16-20 kg);
Life Span: 7-9 years;
English Bulldogs - Rescues - Temperament
Despite their somewhat threatening appearance, contemporary Bulldogs are kind and affable. They are gentle with children and it is very easy to find common ground with a Bulldog. However, they can be wary of strangers, because they are very brave and protective. Well-socialized Bulldogs are good with other domestic pets too. However, they may be suspicious of other dogs.
English Bulldogs are gentle and affectionate. The public no longer views them as fighter dogs, because they are well accustomed to indoor dwelling. Besides, they are very fond of receiving cuddles and caresses from their owners. However, English Bulldogs can boast of a wonderful ability to perform as noble a duty as home guarding, and if it comes to that, they do a good job!
